Background
Created by Jackson to be a traveling companion for his caravan, Ada is a heavily modified Assaultron retrofitted with sentry bot and Protectron parts.[1][2] The group specialized in mechanical repairs and trade and made a living traveling throughout the wasteland looking for ruins full of spare parts to use or sell;[3] Ada primarily assisted a member named Zoe with setting up temporary defenses whenever the caravan stopped to scavenge, including places such as an old salvage yard and a robotics factory where they acquired Hurtz.[4] They had at least one prior encounter with the Rust Devils, a raider gang specializing in robotics engineering, during a trek across the Charles River into Boston where they learned about the group's own destructive methods.[5]
Around late 2287, the caravan suffered a quick succession of three attacks by similarly-patchwork robots that spouted the Mechanist's message of peace for the Commonwealth.[6] After the first attack, the group debated whether to stay or leave the Commonwealth, but took the "calculated risk" to stay. They also salvaged some loose parts from the hostile robots, with Jackson intending to further modify Ada's combat ability.[7] It never came to pass, however, as the final attack, taking place near an old Wattz Consumer Electronics outlet, claimed the lives of her human companions and the two other robots with them, Porter and Hurtz, leaving only Ada still standing.[6]
Personality
While she was originally a manufactured automaton beholden to her programming, Ada, like other robots such as Codsworth and KL-E-0, gradually evolved beyond her virtual routines and developed a humanistic personality capable of a wider range of emotions. This was due to the family-like bond she shared with Jackson and his colleagues; she remembers that the former directly told her he saw her as more than just a servitor robot, so he set her personality mode to "on" permanently.[8]
This helped Ada to see past the idea of the caravaneers being just her creators and instead gain affection for them as her "friends."[9][10][11] Their deaths by the Mechanist's robots likewise ignited in Ada intense feelings of sorrow as well as anger, fueling a desire for revenge against the one responsible,[12][13][14] though she cannot outwardly express this as well as a human could. She can even admit to the Sole Survivor that her emotional capability and the negative feelings it can generate has led her, more than once, to ponder if she would have been better off if Jackson disabled her personality mode and she remained an unfeeling robot.[8]

Companion
- Ada becomes available as a companion after defeating the Mechanist robots near Wattz Consumer Electronics and agreeing to help her look for the Mechanist during Mechanical Menace (though it is not required to recruit her to continue the questline).
- Ada is the only companion aside from Dogmeat that remains friendly to the player character regardless of actions, positive or negative. She will offer advice and her opinion depending on the situation like any other companion but will never gain or lose Affinity. As a result, though, Ada has no associated Affinity perk to gain.
- If Ada is an active companion, upon talking to her she may give several random junk items, a trait she shares with all player-built automatrons that have their personality subroutines activated.
- She is one of three companions that can be ordered to steal owned items.
- She is one of three companions (excluding automatrons) able to be modifiable at the robot workbench, the others being Curie (before completing Emergent Behavior) and Codsworth.
- Being a modifiable robot, Ada can be upgraded with lockpicking or hacking capabilities to cover for the player character's potential shortcomings in any of those fields, whether they lack the requisite perks themselves, or Cait or Nick Valentine are not available.
- If dismissed, and no location is specified, she will relocate to the Red Rocket truck stop, but will not count towards that settlement's population. If a location is specified, including the Red Rocket truck stop, she will count towards the population of that settlement.
- When Ada is an active companion, NPCs like Diamond City security will not make any comments about her as they would with base game companions.
Effects of player's actions
- If the Mechanist is killed during Restoring Order, Ada will take over the role as the quest-giver for the radiant Rogue Robot quests.
Other interactions
- Ada will not comment if taken to Nate's/Nora's corpse in Vault 111.
- She will not ride as a passenger when boarding a vertibird.[15]
- Ada apparently has a simulated sense of smell, as she will mention her "olfactory sensors" when brought near a location populated by mirelurks.[16]
- If asked if she can activate her self-destruct mechanism, Ada says that Jackson prevented anything like that from being installed, knowing he had better plans for her than ending up as debris.[17] She likewise refutes any requests to turn off her personality subroutine.[18]
- If brought to Boston Airport after completing Reunions, Ada will mention that Jackson's caravan had previous run-ins with the Brotherhood of Steel and that they were never to be provoked and avoided at all costs.[19]

Notes
Ada's default configuration upon meeting the Sole Survivor features an Assaultron head with head factory armor, an Assaultron torso with front factory storage armor and rear factory storage armor, an Assaultron left arm with left arm factory armor and Assaultron left hand claw, a sentry bot right arm with right arm factory armor and right hand laser, and Protectron legs with no armor, all with an aqua paint scheme.
Appearances
Ada appears in the Fallout 4 add-on Automatron and Fallout: The Roleplaying Game supplement book Settler's Guide Book.
Behind the scenes
- Ada is voiced by Rachel Robinson, who also provides the voice for the "female" voice type available to automatron companions constructed at robot workbenches.
- In localized versions of the game, Ada's voice is dubbed by Haruka Kajiyama (Japanese) and Isabel Fernández Avanthay (Spanish).
- Ada's name is a reference to Ada Lovelace, a real-world mathematician and an early innovator in the field of computer science. She shares her namesake with Lady Lovelace, another Assaultron present at the Easy City Downs robot racetrack.
- Some of Ada's dialogue lines are references to pop culture and science fiction:
- Her line "resistance is futile" when entering combat is a reference to the Borg in Star Trek.
- After using a terminal, Ada may say "Using a keyboard. How quaint.", a reference to a similar line from Mr. Scott in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
- Another one is found during Restoring Order when she mentions "It feels like: Poetry in motion," referring to the popular song by Johnny Tillotson in 1960.
- She will also say, "If you don't eat your meat, how can you have any pudding?" in any school location. This is a reference to Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2 by Pink Floyd.
Bugs
- During the quest A New Threat, when one has to install the radar beacon on Ada with the robot workbench, only the option to modify her legs will be available, making the quest impossible to complete. A possible fix is to shoot Ada until she is crippled.[verified]
- Ada can be commanded to pick up an infinite amount of items using the command action, thus making her carrying capacity unlimited.[verified]
- When commanded to hack a terminal, she may not acknowledge the command and will continue to behave as if it was never given. The game may need to be restarted to fix this.[verified]
- As a companion, Ada will repeatedly back up and run into the player.[verified]
- Ada may sometimes disappear without a trace. To fix this, select a new companion, and Ada will be returned to a selected location.[verified]
- Ada will behave as if the player went to confront the Mechanist by themselves, asking questions like "what did she say?" even if she is present and spoke during the final dialogue.[verified]
- There is a chance the player will not be able to talk to her at all if nearby raiders interrupt the conversation when first responding to the caravan distress call.[verified]
- To prevent this, make sure the area is clear of enemies before talking to her.
- Ada's pathing appears to be bugged; if commanded to go somewhere or do something, she may choose an unnecessarily long or impossible route. If she is caught on small pieces of irregular geometry, i.e. rubble, she will tell the player she cannot go where commanded instead of walking around it.[verified]

Ada: "They roam the Commonwealth and claim to be restoring order. We've seen them fighting Raiders, but they've also attacked innocents. Settlers, merchants... and caravans like ours. We knew we ran the risk of encountering more of these hostile robots if we stayed in the Commonwealth. If only we had made the decision to leave."
The Sole Survivor: "So why did you end up staying?"
Ada: "Our caravan specialized in mechanical repairs and trade. The Commonwealth has an abundance of salvage that would benefit our business. It was a calculated risk."

- ↑ The Sole Survivor: "Who or what are the 'Rust Devils?'"
Ada: "Allow me to explain. My old caravan encountered them once while crossing the river into the city. The Rust Devils are a group of ruthless Raiders who utilize robots for their nefarious practices. They scour the Commonwealth looking for my kind. What they can't capture and reprogram, they strip for spare parts. I realize they pose a greater threat to me than you... I just want you to be well informed."

Perhaps if I had selected an alternate route, they'd still be alive. Sometimes I wish that Jackson had programmed me with my personality mode set permanently to disabled so I wouldn't feel so upset."

The Sole Survivor: "Your personality mode? What do you mean?"
Ada: "Most robots have a personality mode select available to them for their creator to utilize. Turn it on, and we're designed to talk and act more like a human. Turn it off, and we're no better than a mindless automaton. Jackson said he didn't think of me as a servitor robot... he treated me more like a friend. So he permanently set my personality mode to 'on.' He said I should never lose my identity. I suppose I'm starting to think he was wrong."

(Ada's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "Are you ok?"
Ada: "Physically, the damage is minor, but I am registering sadness and anger at the loss of my friends. It may sound strange coming from a robot, but they were my... family. Again, I thank you for your efforts. I know they would have thanked you as well."
(Ada's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "You want revenge, don't you?"
Ada: "I admit my goal is twofold. Stopping the Mechanist both protects the Commonwealth, and allows me to avenge my fallen friends. I won't rest until I see this threat dissolved. I owe it to them."
(Ada's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "You couldn't have known something like this would happen."
Ada: "The probability of attack was high. I should have forced our departure. In recompense, I will seek justice for my friends and stop these robots from causing further harm. It's time to uncover the source and confront their leader: the Mechanist."
(Ada's dialogue) - ↑ Ada: "Unfortunately, a vertibird cannot properly accommodate me for air travel. I'll meet you at your destination."

(Ada's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "Are you able to self-destruct?"
Ada: "No, I can't. I'm fairly certain that my original creator had grander plans for me other than becoming a pile of debris."
(Ada's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "I think it's time to disable your personality subroutine."
Ada: "Sorry, no can do. That switch was disabled when I was built. I'm afraid you're stuck with me this way."
