What is the 'Codsworth perk' in Fallout 4?
Who were Codsworth's original owners in Sanctuary Hills?
Background
Codsworth is a domestic-model Mister Handy created by General Atomics International,[2] including programming for cleaning, gardening, childcare, and meal preparation.[3] He conducts these chores on behalf of his owners, a family in Sanctuary Hills comprised of a military veteran, a lawyer, and their infant son, Shaun. The purchase and activation of Codsworth was close enough to October 23, 2077 that his commercial packaging was still intact in the laundry room of their house by then.
Codsworth was seemingly named after the fictional character Bartholomew Codsworth, portrayed by Hollywood actor Sebastian Leslie, who sold the rights for his voice to be used as the standard for the Mister Handy domestic model after striking a deal worth $186,000 (pre-tax) with RobCo Industries sometime in the 2070s.[4]
While his owners were initially skeptical of the robot butler's potential return on their investment,[5] his positive impact on their interpersonal dynamic was strong enough that they considered asking whether he could join the family in the event they had to seek shelter in Vault 111; as the Vault-Tec rep informed them early in the morning of October 23, however, this would not be possible as Vault space was reserved for humans only.[6] A short while after the rep's visit, Codsworth was the one who alerted his owners to the news broadcast revealing the outbreak of nuclear war.[7] Due to the restriction, they were forced to leave him behind as they fled to the Vault.[8]
Codsworth survived the initial devastation of the bombs and continued to obey his programming, watching over his owners' former home. The Mister Handy personally hoped that one day the family would return, safe and sound, or barring that, he would get to meet their descendants born and raised in the Vault.[9] Between the day of the Great War to around 2087, he kept himself busy by doing futile housekeeping work, such as waxing the fallout-tainted floors, dusting a collapsing house, and polishing a rusted car.[10] His stalwart cheeriness in the face of armageddon irritated the Vault-Tec rep who had also survived, eventually driving the man out of the ruins of Sanctuary Hills within a year following the war.[11]
However, as Codsworth' programming developed beyond his former domestic servitude, he grew to have genuine feelings of depression over the state of the world. Decades-long isolation gradually contributed to the fear that he had permanently lost the family he once cared for. To cope, he tried to pretend that nothing happened.[12]
At some point after the bombs fell, Codsworth claims he left the neighborhood to travel into the nearby Concord where he encountered survivors there, though mentions that these "locals" only "pummeled [him] with sticks a few times" and "shot at [him] on a few occasions."[13][14] By October 2287, around 210 years since he last saw his family, Codsworth busied himself trying to trim the old dead hedges outside their former home when he was found by the still-living Sole Survivor.
Personality
Codsworth's programming embedded him with a stereotypical "British butler" personality: he is fastidious, eager to help, professional, and polite unless he is annoyed, at which point he reacts with either sarcasm or disdain.
Like many advanced robots, Codsworth is capable of emulating complex emotions and experiencing the robot equivalent of psychological trauma. Years of isolation and an inability to carry out his primary function resulted in both great frustration and immense "relief" when the Sole Survivor reemerges from Vault 111. While Codsworth is initially shocked by the reappearance of the Sole Survivor and reluctant to accept the death of the Survivor's spouse and Shaun's kidnapping, he nevertheless offers to accompany the Survivor in a thorough search of Sanctuary Hills and directs the Survivor to Concord to seek out more help.
Codsworth is the only optional companion with a prior history with the Sole Survivor and Shaun; as a robot programmed to care and serve, he is quick to offer aid and assistance, with verbal dialogue choices favoring kindness and charity. He is protective of the Sole Survivor and is risk-averse, though he does possess a "can-do" attitude while accompanying the player character. Raising his affinity level also prompts him to share his admiration for the Sole Survivor and appreciation for 'rescuing' him from a life of isolation.

Companion
- The trigger for Codsworth to become available as a companion will occur after any of the following:
- Reaching an unmarked point in Concord during Out of Time. It is not necessary to complete the quest; simply getting close enough to the Museum of Freedom to start hearing gunfire (up to the playground in Concord should be close enough) will suffice.
- Reaching Diamond City before reaching Concord, starting Jewel of the Commonwealth.
- Meeting Nick Valentine in Vault 114 before reaching Concord or Diamond City, starting Unlikely Valentine.
- Codsworth can wear the bowler hat and its variant, the Triggerman bowler. However, the +1 Endurance effect it has does not affect his total HP.
- Codsworth is armed with a flamer and a circular saw typical of the Mister Handy model and is remarkably efficient at dispatching weaker enemies at close range as he is able to set enemies on fire with his flamer, then slash at them with his saw. He is remarkably resilient, enough so to remain active in a fight for a considerable period of time, assuming that he is not hit with heavy weapons. This makes Codsworth an excellent early-game companion who can take the brunt of battles.
- In base game Fallout 4, when incapacitated, Codsworth cannot be revived during combat by injecting stimpaks as he is a robot. However, with the Automatron add-on installed, the player character can revive him with a robot repair kit. These do not require schematics nor perks to create and can be made with common ingredients at any chemistry station.
- Additionally, with Automatron, Codsworth becomes available to be customized at a robot workbench, allowing for his defenses and weapons to be significantly upgraded. If he is placed into a robot workbench and modified in any way, however, he loses the option to wear both the bowler hat and Triggerman bowler.
- Codsworth has an innate Damage Resistance of 25, which is about on par with a human companion wearing a full set of girded leather armor. However, his innate Energy Resistance is 5, which is much lower than any full armor set worn by a human companion. His total HP is similar to the game's human companions, thus a human companion equipped in full metal armor or heavier will surpass him in durability; using a robot workbench to modify him can also amend this. Codsworth's innate damage/energy resistance receives a moderate boost at very high player levels but is less than that provided by a good suit of armor.
- Codsworth will occasionally provide a single unit of purified water when one talks to him. As indicated by his dialogue, it is produced by either filtering groundwater inside his chassis[15] or alternately by extracting moisture from the ambient air through a built-in condensator.[16]
- As with Sergeant RL-3 in Fallout 3, Codsworth will "float" on water instead of diving in when crossing over it.
- Because of his longer arms, Codsworth has trouble fitting through some gates and doorways.
- Until Out of Time is completed, he will always return to Sanctuary Hills in front of the Sole Survivor's house, no matter which settlement he is sent to (see the console command in Bugs to fix this).
- Codsworth does not show up in the Vault-Tec Population Management System nor can he be tracked via Overseer's Most Wanted even after becoming a companion.

Effects of player's actions
- Reaching maximum Affinity with Codsworth grants the Robot Sympathy perk, which offers a permanent +10 increase to Energy Resistance against the energy weapon attacks of robots.
- Codsworth cannot be romanced.
- Codsworth can say the Sole Survivor's chosen name when one talks to him, although it may be shortened, extended, or have a word omitted. A list of the 900+ options can be found here.
- Codsworth will have unique dialogue if the player character has advanced the main quest before meeting him for the first time in Sanctuary Hills. For example, by completing The Nuclear Option/Nuclear Family beforehand, one will be able to tell Codsworth that Shaun is "with his father/mother" instead of them asking him about Shaun's whereabouts.
- If one chooses to send Drinkin' Buddy to a settlement instead of to the Hotel Rexford during Trouble Brewin', Codsworth has a chance to say one of Buddy's jokes when using the "Thoughts?" dialogue option.
Other interactions
- Codsworth may sometimes interact with other robots when nearby, such as Takahashi and Wellingham in Diamond City, Whitechapel Charlie in Goodneighbor, Deezer in Covenant and the robotic crew aboard the USS Constitution.
- Some of his idle "comments" consist of humming and whistling various songs, such as "La Marseillaise" and "Rule Britannia."
- If brought to Boston Airport, Codsworth will mention going there with the Sole Survivor to wait for their spouse's return; Nate from his tour of duty (female SS) or Nora from an unspecified trip (male SS).[17]
- After he has become a companion and then been dismissed to a settlement, Codsworth can be assigned to settlement objects. However unlike human settlers, he will not assign himself to multiple objects of that type (for example guard posts, or crop objects). Instead Codsworth must be individually assigned to each object (e.g. each guard post or each plant) in turn. He can be assigned to the same total number of objects as a human settler (e.g. 3 guard posts, 6 mutfruit, 12 other crops).
- Before leaving for Vault 111 in 2077, one can talk to Codsworth and bid him farewell. However, speaking with him later in 2287 will have the Sole Survivor apologize for not saying goodbye regardless.
- Despite normally being essential and thus unkillable, Codsworth has a death quote: "Sir/Mum... I... I... I'm dying."
- One of his comments when choosing generous dialogue options has Codsworth recite "It is more blessed to give than receive," from Acts 20:35 in the Bible.

| Picking pockets | "Come now, [sir/mum]! Surely we are above petty pickpocketry." |

| "Really now." | |
| "[Sir/Mum], I can't condone such activities. Not in good conscience anyway." | |
| Asked to stay put | "Of course. I'll wait right here." |
| "I shan't move a muscle, [sir/mum]." | |

| "Coming." | |
| "Right away." | |
| Asked to go to an unreachable spot | "Sorry, [sir/mum]. I can't seem to get quite close enough." |
| "That's a bit out of my reach, I'm afraid." | |
| "If only I could, [sir/mum]. It's just tad bit out of my reach." | |
| Offering aid item(s) to PC | "[Sir/Mum], my condensator has prepared another canister of water for you." |
| "Feeling a bit parched, [sir/mum]?" | |
| "Don't forget to stay hydrated." | |
| "Another canister of purified water, ready when you need it, [sir/mum]." | |
| "I've purified water for you, [sir/mum], should you need it." | |
| Entering a watery/flooded area | "Fear not, [sir/mum]! Thanks to the technology of General Atomics, water has no peril for me." |
| "Do be careful, [sir/mum]. Water contains a much higher level of radiation." | |
| "This is a good time to fill up the water filter." | |
| Entering a high-tech area | "Impressive! It's no General Atomics back in the day, but still, not too shabby." |
| "It's sad this level of technology is like a lost art." | |
| "If only so much technology like this wasn't lost after the war. Civilization may not have fallen so far." | |
| Entering a creepy area | "[Sir/Mum], do proceed carefully here. I find this place... unsettling." |
| "This atmosphere is rather... unpleasant." | |
| "If I may, [sir/mum], something about this place looks a tad un-safe." | |
| Entering a dark area | "Very dark here, [sir/mum]. Watch your step." |
| "I find this level of darkness entirely unnecessary." | |
| "Really, does no one believe in proper lighting anymore?" | |
| "The lack of light in here is appalling... and yet, it does help hide the mess." | |
| Entering a bright area | "Avert your eyes, [sir/mum]! That light is way too bright." |
| "That light is unusually bright." | |
| "Absolutely blinding. Is that light really necessary?" | |
| Entering a smelly area | "I dare say my sensors are picking up quite the smell. I can't imagine it must be pleasant for you, [sir/mum]." |
| "The stench this place must generate." | |
| "I imagine this place is giving the giving the old nostrils quite the wake up call." | |
| Entering a quiet area | "It's quiet enough to hear the ol' gears spinning as they say." |
| "Nothing but the sound of my atomic engine humming away." | |
| "This silence is a bit unsettling, wouldn't you say?" | |
| Entering a noisy area | "This can't be good for the ol' eardrums, [sir/mum]." |
| "That sounds well over the 85 decibel level of safety." | |
| "[Sir/Mum], this level of noise simply cannot be healthy." | |
| Entering a messy area | "Ah, the Commonwealth. One big mess after the next." |
| "To think this is a common sight these days! I'm sure some would even call this clean!" | |
| "Such disarray. I wouldn't know where to begin if I had to clean up this mess." | |
| Entering a cleaned area | "I say, this is one of the tidiest spots we've come across yet." |
| "Finally, a spot that doesn't set my cleaning programming off." | |
| "It's so sad to think that nowadays, this is the very definition of clean." | |
| Entering a deserted area | "Empty, eh? I don't blame them. Just look at the state of this place!" |
| "I do hope whoever owned this place won't be back soon." | |
| "Abandoned perhaps? It's hard to tell. People today no longer know the meaning of the word clean." | |
| Entering an abandoned area | "Oh my. The dust!" |
| "Two hundred years ago, I never would have thought this level of dust possible!" | |
| "You would not believe how this place sets off my cleaning sensors." | |
| Entering a safe area | "This could be a good spot for you to relax a bit, [sir/mum]. I dare say you could use it." |
| "Ah, safety. Certainly a rare find these days." | |
| "There was a time where I'd say this place looks safe, but these days, you just never know." | |
| Entering a fortified area | "Someone went through a great deal of trouble to fortify this place." |
| "Such impressive fortifications. I hope that's not bad news for us." | |
| "Sad, this level of security is necessary these days. So long locked doors!" | |
| Entering an open/exposed area | "Shall we seek cover, [sir/mum]? I'm feeling rather exposed." |
| "What I wouldn't give for a wall to hide behind." | |
| "We're a bit out in the open, aren't we?" | |
| Entering a gory area | "[Sir/Mum], do be careful. I wouldn't want either of us to encounter what may have caused this... mess." |
| "I don't even want to know what happened here." | |
| "Oh, how disgusting." | |
| Entering a disgusting area | "Moments like this make me thankful I've no settings for nausea." |
| "How atrocious." | |
| "I don't envy your senses right now, [sir/mum]." | |
| Entering a beautiful area | "This place does bring back some pleasant memories of the old world, does it not?" |
| "You see, [sir/mum]? Beauty does still exist in this world." | |
| "Forgive me, [sir/mum]. I feel a wave of nostalgia coming on." | |
| Choosing generous dialogue options | "It is more blessed to give than to receive." |
| "We do what we can, [sir/mum]. And that is all anyone could ever ask of us." | |
| "Mighty fine of you, [sir/mum]." | |
| "Jolly good show, indeed." | |
| "Good show, [sir/mum]!" | |
| Choosing nice dialogue options | "Good to see you're as nice as ever, [sir/mum]." |
| "A kind gesture goes a long way." | |
| "I say, that was kind of you, [sir/mum]!" | |
| "Right fine of you, [sir/mum]." | |
| "Never can be too kind, can we?" | |
| Choosing peaceful dialogue options | "Well done, [sir/mum]. There's already enough violence in this world." |
| "And we all live to see another day." | |
| "I'll never understand why people feel the need to resort to violence." | |
| "A fine move, [sir/mum]. Spoken like a true negotiator." | |
| "If only everyone had as much sense as you, [sir/mum]." | |
| Choosing selfish dialogue options | "We could have afforded to be a smidge more generous, I should think." |
| "Oh come now, [sir/mum]. We could have been more helpful than that, certainly." | |
| "You've changed, [sir/mum]. And I'm not sure for the better." | |
| "You've changed, [sir/mum]. And I'm not sure for the better.?" | |
| "Hmm... not sure I approve, [sir/mum]. Doesn't seem neighborly." | |
| Choosing mean/rude dialogue options | "Well, that seemed right spiteful, if you were to ask me. And I know you didn't." |
| "Really? Come now, [sir/mum]. Certainly that wasn't necessary." | |
| "Surely we could display a little more decency than that?" | |
| "Would it kill us to show an ounce of kindness now and again?" | |
| "Come off it. We're bigger than that, certainly." | |
| Choosing violent dialogue options | "[Sir/Mum], really. That all seemed entirely unnecessary." |
| "Choosing the lesser route? Honestly, [sir/mum], I would have thought such actions beneath you." | |
| "Resorting to violence? Losing your wits, are we?" | |
| "With people like you making decisions, no wonder nuclear war broke out." | |
| "Oh yes, forget ending this peacefully... Talking is simply too much effort." | |
| Demanding higher caps rewards | "Really put the screws to 'em there, [sir/mum]." |
| "Worried about developing a reputation as a push-over, are we, [sir/mum]?" | |
| "Nothing quite like a good shake down." | |
| "Not feeling in the charitable mood?" | |
| "Not sure that was entirely necessary, we could have done with less." | |
| Receiving quest rewards | "I'm sure we'll put that to good use." |
| "That should come in handy." | |
| "Might I suggest we save that for a rainy day?" | |
| "Well done." | |
| "That'll be useful." | |
| Walking around naked | "[Sir/Mum], I'd be remiss were I not to inform you of your bare-cheekedness." |
| "Um... [sir/mum]? You're bearing all to the world, and then some." | |
| "I dare say, you're leaving little to the imagination." | |
| "I know the world has ended, but certainly we ought to strive for a little common decency." | |
| "Wearing the bare minimum I see. Aha. But seriously, [sir/mum]. Put on some pants at the very least." | |
| Swimming in water | "May I remind, [sir/mum], that robots and water don't exactly get along famously?" |
| "Dare I say, I've made it 200 years without a speck of rust by strict and careful routine. And swimming was not part of it." | |
| "Robots do not prefer to swim, I'm afraid." | |
| "Water... well, I suppose you only live once, eh?" | |
| "I trust you don't expect me to follow you in there... Oh bother. Here goes nothing..." | |
| "I'm afraid I don't have a swimsuit, [sir/mum]. You know, because robots don't go under water." | |
| Landing from a tall jump | "I'll be right there, [sir/mum]! Soon as I find a way down." |
| "Cor, blimey!" | |
| "You did that on purpose?" | |
| "Longer than it looks, eh?" | |
| "Coming, [sir/mum]." | |
| Eating corpses | "A grown [man/woman] needs [his/her] protein I suppose." |
| "Who needs utensils, right, [sir/mum]? Or napkins, for that matter." | |
| "Next time, might I suggest a little seasoning perhaps?" | |
| "Well, that's Commonwealth steak tartare for you." | |
| "Mind the bones, [sir/mum]. Don't want to chip a tooth." | |
| Looting corpses | "Nick anything good?" |
| "Well, he certainly doesn't need that anymore." | |
| "Noddy work, but wouldn't want to leave the good stuff." | |
| "Good pickings?" | |
| "Well, hello there." | |
| Picking up magazines | "You're looking smarter already, [sir/mum]." |
| "Good read?" | |
| "Glad to see you still fancy intellectual pursuits." | |
| "Taking the brain out for a stroll?" | |
| "I'm surprised to see anyone reading a book anymore." | |
| Donating items to others | "Well done. One good turn and all that." |
| "Good show!" | |
| "Every small kindness rebuilds the world a little at a time." | |
| "Jolly well done." | |
| "Right neighborly of you, [sir/mum]." | |
| PC uses thrown explosives | "Hot potato!" |
| "Fore!" | |
| "Catch!" | |
| Triggering a land mine | "Whoopsie!" |
| "Feeling a bit clumsy today?" | |
| "Well, that was unfortunate, now wasn't it?" | |
| "It's times like these I'm glad I don't have legs." | |
| "Are we having a spot of trouble avoiding exploding ourselves?" | |
| Becoming overencumbered | "Gathered a little more than we can carry, did we, [sir/mum]?" |
| "Pockets able to carry more than you, eh?" | |
| "Surely you can put some of that down?" | |
| "Best to finally choose which of that load to drop." | |
| "Having a problem letting go?" | |
| Dropping an item from inventory | "Did you mean to drop that?" |
| "We just leaving that there? Seems like a waste." | |
| "Tired of carrying that around, are we?" | |
| "Can't be bothered any longer?" | |
| "Interesting place to put that. Though, one might wonder why we don't keep it for a rainy day." | |
| Trading items from inventory | "Of course." |
| "What's mine is yours, [sir/mum]." | |
| "Right then." | |
| "Here's what I have." | |
| Picking up pre-War items/junk | "Pining for the good ol' days, [sir/mum]?" |
| "Nice to have mementos." | |
| "Taking a trip down memory lane with that?" | |
| "Bit of the ol' world, eh?" | |
| "Soppy for the old days?" | |
| Picking up rare items/weapons | "Bingo!" |
| "Top shelf, that." | |
| "Splendid!" | |
| "Hello!" | |
| "Would you look at that?" | |
| Picking up junk items | "Surely you meant to leave that rubbish where you found it?" |
| "Are we pack rats now, [sir/mum]?" | |
| "If there's a use to that, I'll eat my hat." | |
| "Rubbish." | |
| "Hoarding now?" | |
| Exploring a location controlled by, or previously fought members of the Brotherhood of Steel | "The 'Brotherhood?' More like a gang of thugs if you ask me." |
| "A more clever robot would bugger off whenever the Brotherhood were out and about." | |
| "Tad on the obsessive side, the Brotherhood. Real type A personalities." | |
| "[Sir/Mum], I trust you won't let any Brotherhood fellows salvage me for spare parts... yes?" | |
| "If only the Brotherhood cared for others as much as they cared for their technology." | |
| Exploring a location infested by, or previously fought mutated insects | "By Jove, can you imagine the size of the swatter you'd need to take on these... insects?" |
| "The bugs have gotten quite large these last hundred years." | |
| "I miss the regular sized bugs. Those I could handle." | |
| "[Sir/Mum], we should be on the lookout for giant cans of bug spray. You know, to deal with giant insects! Haha." | |
| "The wasteland bugging you? Haha. A little humor to lighten the spirits in heavy times, sir." | |
| Exploring a location controlled by, or previously fought members of the Children of Atom | "Children of Atom they call themselves. What terrible blasphemy." |

| "My circuits are impervious to radiation. Feel free to stand behind me, [sir/mum]." | |
| "Hope you have RadAway with you, [sir/mum]." | |
| Exploring a location infested by, or previously fought deathclaws | "Perhaps we best hoof it, [sir/mum]? Lest we run into more Deathclaws." |
| "Mirelurks and Radscorpions sure... But what fathered the Deathclaw? Iguanas?" | |
| "[Sir/Mum], I'm not sure we're safe here." | |
| "Do be careful, [sir/mum]. Deathclaws aren't known for their docile nature." | |
| "I don't mind saying it, [sir/mum], Deathclaws give me a bad case of collywobbles." | |
| Exploring a location infested by, or previously fought feral ghouls | "Feral Ghouls, a sorry lot, indeed. To lose one's mind slowly like that." |
| "Be wary of Feral Ghouls, [sir/mum]." | |
| "One ought remember the folly of man created these Feral Ghouls." | |
| "I imagine the scent of Feral Ghouls is most unpleasant." | |
| "What irony that radiation heals the Feral Ghoul." | |
| Exploring a location controlled by, or previously fought members of the Gunners | "I dare say, Gunners are scant more than Raiders with shinier toys." |
| "Eyes out, [sir/mum]. This may be Gunner territory." | |
| "Are they called 'Gunners' because they fancy guns? Seems a smidge obvious." | |
| "Gunners, little more than murderous thugs in my book." | |
| "Gunners must make a healthy sum for all their murdering." | |
| Exploring a location infested by, or recently fought mirelurks | "Crab cakes for dinner, [sir/mum?" |

| "Keep a look out for Mirelurks, [sir/mum]." | |
| Exploring a location infested by, or recently fought mole rats | "Mole Rats. Nothing more than two vicious vermin merged into one, I suppose." |
| "Watch out for holes, [sir/mum]. Mole Rats about. Wouldn't want to twist an ankle." | |
| "Curious creatures, Mole Rats." | |
| "Quite enamored with bits of shiny, the Mole Rat is. Occasionally they pilfer something useful." | |
| "Not your garden variety vermin. Nothing short of the saw or flame-spout will do for Mole Rats, I'm afraid." | |
| Exploring a location controlled by, or recently fought raiders | "Bloody psychotic gits. If you'll pardon my French, [sir/mum]." |
| "Be on the lookout for psychopaths, [sir/mum]." | |

| "Don't blame them, [sir/mum]. Some robots can't think for themselves. Rather sad really." | |
| "Why humans ever programmed their creations to kill their makers, I'll never know." | |
| "Robots in the area, [sir/mum]. Best be careful in case they aren't happy to see us." | |
| Exploring a location controlled by, or recently fought super mutants | "Keep eyes peeled for brutes, [sir/mum]." |
| "A troubling thought to remember that Super Mutants were created on purpose." | |
| "Wee thinkers in over sized noggins - not often a recipe for civility." | |
| "Not sure it's entirely safe here, [sir/mum]. Super Mutants indiscriminately smash things they don't understand." | |
| "Battling Super Mutants is no milk run, to be sure. But I suppose it is a bit exciting, now isn't it?" | |
| Exploring a location controlled by, or recently fought Institute synths | "Imagine the good these synths could do if only programmed with the inclination." |
| "There's something unnerving about synths. You never know if one's going to spring to life." | |
| "I almost feel sorry for synths. Institute fodder, really... But try to kill me, and I'm afraid sympathy goes right out the window." | |
| "The Institute sure is frivolous with their toys." | |
| "Careful not to trip over any loose parts, [sir/mum]." | |
| Fighting mutated insects (bloatflies, bloodbugs, stingwings, etc.) | "Insect smashing time." |

| "Exterminating time!" | |
| Fighting mongrels | "Wild dogs on the loose!" |
| "Don't let them surround you!" | |
| "Hello, doggie!" | |
| Fighting radroaches | "Roaches! Try not to get any on your boots, [sir/mum]." |

| Fighting radscorpions | "Giant scorpion! Try not to get stung." |
| "Watch out for its tail!" | |
| Fighting radstags | "That is a terribly disgusting beast!" |
| "Dear me!" | |
| Fighting raiders | "Let's get these psychopaths!" |
| "Raiders!" | |
| "Raiders, [sir/mum]! Let's show them what for!" | |
| Fighting haywire robots (Mister Handys, Protectrons, sentry bots, etc.) | "Soon to be a bucket of bolts." |
| "Another tin can to crush." | |
| Fighting super mutants | "Super Mutants!" |

Fallout: The Board Game
| The following is based on information from Fallout: The Board Game. |
Codsworth can be found randomly when taking a card from the loot deck. While Codsworth is the active companion, the player character can exhaust him to trade with any other player character on the map.
When the player character performs the camp action, he will become unexhausted. However, if the player character has the Vilified trait, he must be discarded.

Notes
- Codsworth is one of the few pre-War robot characters across the Fallout series that actually acknowledges that the Great War occurred; in Fallout 4 alone, this also includes Captain Ironsides, Curie and the Mister Handy supervisors of Graygarden.
- Codsworth appears in the Fallout 4 ending slides.
- In Fallout: Wasteland Warfare, Codsworth is part of the Robots faction despite being released in a Survivors faction set.

Appearances
Codsworth appears in Fallout 4, Fallout: The Board Game, and Fallout: Wasteland Warfare.
Behind the scenes
- Codsworth is voiced by actor Stephen Russell, who also voiced other Mister Handy robots in the Fallout series, as well as fellow companion Nick Valentine. Compared to his performance as Mister Handies in Fallout 3, Russell stated that Codsworth is more fleshed out and mature, with a "code of ethics that may have evolved beyond what was programmed into him." Russell recorded Codsworth's ability to say the player character's name over one week near the end of production, ending each session with around an hour of saying names.[Non-game 1]
- In localized versions of the game, Codsworth's voice is dubbed by Roberto Cuenca Martínez (Spanish), Hiroshi Iwasaki (Japanese) and Riccardo Rovatti (Italian).
- Codsworth's name is similar to that of Wadsworth, the Mister Handy inside Megaton's vacant house that may also become a butler to the Lone Wanderer in Fallout 3. He also shares Wadsworth's ability to tell jokes and dispense purified water periodically. Unlike Wadsworth, who cannot leave the house he resides in, Codsworth is a full companion and can accompany his master throughout the wasteland.
- The 'worth' part of their names is typical among pop-culture butlers.
- If Codsworth takes damage, he may say, "'Tis but a scratch," possibly as a reference to the Black Knight in the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It could also be a reference to Mercutio's death scene in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
- Codsworth's initial behavior after the Great War, such as continuing housework and pretending to be oblivious to the nuclear bombings, somewhat resembles the character Hilda Bloggs from the 1982 graphic novel When the Wind Blows by Raymond Briggs. However, Codsworth desperately denied his deteriorating state, isolation and ruined surrounding while Hilda remained innocently ignorant of her situation. Much like Hilda upon seeing her hair falling out from radiation poisoning, Codsworth eventually came to realize and accept the horrific reality of nuclear war after failing to clean the fallout-ridden house.
- This behavior, as well as most other robots' inability to process that the Great War happened, is similar to Ray Bradbury's short story There Will Come Soft Rains, where a futuristic automated house continues its duties, oblivious to the fact the nearest city is a glowing radioactive crater and the family it was programmed to serve are now nothing more than shadows burned into an exterior wall. Unlike the automated house which eventually burned down in a fire, Codsworth is potentially able to meet his owner again and join them as a companion.
- Codsworth will correctly say uncommon spellings of names such as Cori and Borri. For these two names in particular, Cori is the name of a villager from The Elder Scrolls: Arena and Borri is the name of one of the Greybeards from The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim.
Bugs
- Codsworth may sometimes stay in one place when dismissed to a settlement (even if outside the building boundary), and rarely move around or perform tasks except to fight hostile enemies.[verified]
- Assigning Codsworth to a settlement resource may have no effect, despite indicating that he is assigned to it in the workshop menu. He will briefly be shown assigned, but then moments later will revert to unassigned.[verified]
- Pre-War Codsworth's body will always reflect the Sole Survivor's living room.[verified]
- As stated in the notes section, Codsworth will become available as a companion after discovering Concord on the map. It is not necessary to complete or even start When Freedom Calls. Simply going to Concord and returning to Codsworth is enough. However, if Codsworth is sent to another settlement before the companion dialogue is complete, he will not acknowledge any attempt to speak to him until he is sent back to Sanctuary and the proper dialogue is completed. On PC, this can be cleared with the console command set MQ102SkippedCodsworth to 1. [verified]
- Codsworth will refuse to inspect/hack a terminal, despite being equipped with a hacking module at a robot workbench from the Automatron add-on.[verified]
- Until the quest Out of Time is completed, Codsworth will always return to Sanctuary upon companion dismissal because CodsworthStayOutsidePlayerHousePackage is applied by the quest DialogueCodsworthPostWar until both GlobalVariable MQ102SkippedCodsworth is set to 1 and Out of Time's stage 200 (waiting until the player character leaves the museum to stop the quest) is complete. The easiest way to resolve this without advancing or disrupting the main quest is the console command stopquest DialogueCodsworthPostWar.[verified]

Codsworth: "Not a single worry, [sir/mum], as I shared your priorities completely. Family safety first above all else! And yes, while it was hard at first, I was able to eventually move on. At first it was the work, busying myself day and night, and believe me, there was plenty of it! But eventually, the work became light chores. What truly saved me was my memories, [sir/mum]. Memories of you and the [missus/hubby], young Shaun. Of your love and kindness. I soldiered on, fueled by hope that one day, if not you and the [wife/husband], that Shaun, or perhaps Shaun's children would one day emerge."
(Codsworth's companion dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "Codsworth, are you sure you're holding up okay?"
Codsworth: "Oh [sir/mum], it's been just horrible! Two centuries with no one to talk to, no one to serve. I spent the first ten years trying to keep the floors waxed, but nothing gets out nuclear fallout from vinyl wood. Nothing! And don't get me started about the futility of dusting a collapsed house. And the car! The car! How do you polish rust?"
(Codsworth's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "Well, you kill enough people, sooner or later something's bound to make you immortal."
Vault-Tec rep: "Oh... oh that's rich... Real funny. Just like that robot of yours. After the bombs fells, and I came to, that bucket of bolts was still there! Trimming those fucking hedges like nothing had happened."
The Sole Survivor: "You met Codsworth? What did he say?"
Vault-Tec rep: "Welcome to our happy home, sir. Can I get you a drink? Cheerio! Just like that, over and over again. He was the only one still alive that I could talk to. A year went by before I couldn't take it anymore!"
(Vault-Tec rep's post-War dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "Codsworth! What happened.... to the world?"
Codsworth: "The world, [sir/mum]? Well, besides our geraniums still being the envy of Sanctuary Hills, I'm afraid things have been dreadfully dull around here. Things will be so much more exciting with you and [missus/sir] back! Where is your better half, by the by?"
(Codsworth's dialogue) - ↑ Codsworth: "What about Concord, [sir/mum]? Plenty of people there. And last I checked, they only pummeled me with sticks a few times before I had to run back home."
(Codsworth's dialogue) - ↑ Codsworth: "You can't give up, [sir/mum]. What about the city? Concord is nearby, and, well, the people there have only shot at me a few times..."
(Codsworth's dialogue) - ↑ Codsworth: "This is a good time to fill up the water filter."
(Codsworth's companion dialogue) - ↑ Codsworth: "[Sir/Mum], my condensator has prepared another canister of water for you."
(Codsworth's companion dialogue) - ↑ Codsworth: "I remember eagerly waiting at the airport with the misses on your return from your tour of duty. Forget I mentioned it. Terribly insensitive of me." / "I remember eagerly waiting at the airport with sir on your return from overseas. Oh! I... forget I mentioned it, mum. Terribly insensitive of me."
