Well, with a big, bad soldier like you watching my back that's not going to happen, now is it.— Ingram justifying her decision to travel to the Mass Fusion building.

Proctor Ingram, registration IG-444PR, is an officer of the East Coast Brotherhood of Steel in 2287, where she serves as head of engineering, responsible for the maintenance of the Prydwen and other high-level projects for Elder Maxson in the expedition to the Commonwealth.

Background

In her past, Ingram was a scribe with the Capital Wasteland chapter of the Brotherhood, taking part in their conflict against the super mutant clans of the Capital Wasteland. Sometime after 2282, Ingram was stationed at a clifftop staging area for power armor troops during a major super mutant offensive against the Brotherhood's main base of operations. She was on-site when it received a direct hit from a mini nuke, causing the cliff to shear right off, and with it the platform she was standing on. Ingram's saving grace was that she had been test-piloting one of the suits moments before the attack, which saved her life. However, the hundred-foot drop ended up wrecking the armor, in the process destroying Ingram's legs beyond the Brotherhood's ability to heal.[1][2]

However, Ingram refused to just give up. As a talented engineer and programmer,[3] she pushed through the limitations of her disability and continued to work for the Brotherhood, eventually achieving one of the highest honors for a scribe by attaining the rank of proctor and a posting as head of the engineering team of the Brotherhood's airship, the Prydwen. In her capacity as proctor, Ingram's team salvaged a pre-War fusion plant from a derelict aircraft carrier and installed it within the Prydwen, enhancing its long-range travel capabilities and allowing for a faster arrival to the Commonwealth during their expedition.[4] Despite her accomplishments as an engineer, Ingram's biggest desire remained to return to the field and fight among the knights and soldiers of the Brotherhood.

Over a period of six months in cooperation with Knight-Captain Cade, Ingram designed a custom-made power armor frame that would simulate an approximation of full mobility for her, with the proctor undergoing rigorous physical therapy and training in it to a degree that surpassed the abilities of other soldiers,[5] Despite her progress, her skill as an engineer actually prevented her desire from reaching fruition. Due to her valuable contributions as the Prydwen's head engineer, Elder Maxson simply could not afford to clear her for field service and risk losing her to the Brotherhood's enemies, considering it to be a bigger blow to the organization than losing a whole combat unit.[6] Apart from that, the elder also had another reason to keep Ingram grounded: her skills and experience were the crux of the Brotherhood's project to rebuild Liberty Prime to ensure victory in the war against the Institute and their synth army.[7] So important was this mandate, in fact, that Elder Maxson may even be willing to hold back from the standard punishment of a court martial if Ingram were to disobey orders and enter the field for missions related to her engineering tasks. [8] Ingram's team has overseen this project every step of the way, from mere boxes of broken parts to a near-fully rebuilt mechanical frame. Even this has taken years, but this speaks more to the complexity of the project than anything else: Ingram's work was done without any kind of blueprints available.[9][10]

In her day-to-day duties, Ingram heads maintenance on the Prydwen itself, as well as power armor suits, robots, vertibirds, and any other equipment or materiel used on the Prydwen.[11] Because of this, she is constantly busy and running a backlog of work orders.[12]

Personality and relations

On a personal level, Ingram maintains close friendship with both Cade and her fellow Proctor Teagan. Cade is constantly looking for excuses to make her come into his infirmary,[13] while Teagan often tries to cheer her up by digging up goods that she has a weakness for, like sweets to be shared in the comfort of his cabin.[14] Ingram's everyday personality is casual, joking, and sarcastic. She likes bantering with people with playful attitudes, responding with sarcasm or making lighthearted fun of them in return.[12][15]

Ingram is also a strict believer in Maxson's philosophy about the dangers of unchecked technology; she believes no exceptions can be made when it comes to synths, even if they are loyal members of the Brotherhood.[16] That being said, she is not as dogmatic as other members of the Brotherhood, and those who are amuse her more than anything else, though not in a mocking way.[17]

  1. The Sole Survivor: "Your Power Armor helped you survive the fall?"
Ingram: "Yeah, it took the brunt of the impact... but I don't know if I'd call it "surviving." The suit was trashed after it landed, and I lost both of my legs. Haven't walked since."
    (Nate's/Nora's and Proctor Ingram's dialogue)
  2. The Sole Survivor: "Would it help if I promised not to tell anyone else?"
Ingram: "Okay, okay... if it'll get you off my back about it. I was fighting with the Brotherhood in the Capital Wasteland. Worked at a staging area for the Power Armor troops. Our position was along a ridgeline overlooking the battlefield. I'd say it was a hundred foot drop, give or take."
The Sole Survivor: "Who were you fighting?"
Ingram: "Super Mutants. The damn things had wrangled a couple of behemoths and were marching on our main base of operations. To make a long story short, the ridge I was standing on took a hit from a nuke. Sheered most of the cliff right off and caused the platform I was standing on to tumble over the side. If I hadn't have been test-piloting one of the Power Armor suits at the time, I would have died."
The Sole Survivor: "You weren't aboard the Prydwen?"
Ingram: "The Prydwen wasn't under Maxson's command at the time. It wasn't even in the Capital Wasteland. If she'd have been there, the battle wouldn't have been such a challenge. To make a long story short, the ridge I was standing on took a hit from a nuke. Sheered most of the cliff right off and caused the platform I was standing on to tumble over the side. If I hadn't have been test-piloting one of the Power Armor suits at the time, I would have died."
(Nate's/Nora's and Proctor Ingram's dialogue) Note: Ingram does not give a date, but her mention of the Prydwen suggests it was already completed at the time and not under Maxson's command. This would date the reference to around 2282 at the earliest, given the other references dating the Prydwen's earliest known airborne year (see the Prydwen's page).

  9. Proctor Ingram: "Unless you're as blind as a bat, I'm sure you've noticed that we've been building a gantry on the tarmac. Maxson and Kells have been looking for something that'll tip the balance when we go toe to toe with the Institute. Now the Prydwen might be a big beast, but she's not built for fighting. That's where our new project comes in. This storage bay full of parts is what's left of Liberty Prime. The Brotherhood used it in the Capital Wasteland as a weapon against the Enclave. It's the most advanced robot the Brotherhood has ever had at its disposal. Unfortunately, Liberty Prime was destroyed in the line of duty. I've spent the better part of the last few years piecing him back together. In order to get Liberty Prime fully operational, we're going to need your help."

  10. The Sole Survivor: "Turning out to be quite a grocery list to get that hunk of junk running."
Proctor Ingram: "Hey, I was handed a crate full of burned out spare parts with no blueprints and I still managed to get the big guy put back together. Unfortunately, Liberty Prime was destroyed in the line of duty. If we find this last piece, I promise you he'll be combat ready in a matter of hours."

The Sole Survivor: "You should add 'teaching charm school lessons' to the list."
Proctor Ingram: "Sorry to disappoint you, but when you're as busy as I am, there isn't much time for bowing and curtseying. There isn't a day that goes by on this tub without five or six things breaking down. And since I'm stuck in this rig, I'm not quite as spry as I used to be... the work tends to pile up."

  16. The Sole Survivor: "Do you think I did the right thing?"
Proctor Ingram: "You're damn right you did! Unfortunately, Liberty Prime was destroyed in the line of duty. He was a synth, and he needed to go down hard. We can't make exceptions for anyone. If there was even an ounce of Brotherhood left in Danse, I'm betting he would have told you the same thing."
