Chickens are the often mutated descendants of long-domesticated birds that lived before Great War.
Background
Some chickens survived the Great War sheltering in bunkers.[1] In Appalachia, they have survived in a more natural fashion and are considerably more common. Less mutated than other creatures in the area, they are utilized for food.[2]
Variants
Chicken
Some chickens have managed to survive relatively unmutated and resemble their pre-War counterparts. In 2296 such chickens are being bred by some individuals in California.[3]
Rad chicken

Rad chicken variants[4] have been exposed to high levels of radiation, leaving them atrophied and naked. They are slightly smaller than their pre-War ancestors, and likewise pose no threat.

- Mom in Fallout 2 referring to radscorpion en croute as tasting "like chicken."
- Rose refers to a caged deathclaw as a "chicken" as the source of the eggs for her famous omelet, known as the wasteland omelet by Jas Wilkins in Fallout: New Vegas.
- The Easter egg, an item in Fallout 2, was originally intended to spawn a companion referred to as the "Chicken."[Non-game 1]
- Chickens are referred to in the hilltop farm ruins terminal entries in Fallout 3.
- Armitage tells the Lone Wanderer that he could "break [their] neck like a chicken bone."
- Walter Phebus will compare his wife Ethel Phebus's anger to a "wet hen" when accepting to take revenge on Heck Gunderson.[5]
A chicken leg can be found outside Gabe's doghouse as part of the Old World Blues quest A Brain's Best Friend, if the player character has the Wild Wasteland trait.- There is a drawing of a chicken, cow, and horse used in a framed picture near Bunker Hill in Fallout 4. The same drawing appears at an unmarked trapper outpost northwest of the MS Azalea, in the add-on Far Harbor.[6]
- Chickens are referenced in graffiti found in Fallout Tactics, stating "HUMANS TASTE LIKE CHICKEN."
An staff member at the Enclave research facility remarks that chickens are not as mutated as other creatures in the area, and that they are edible.[2]- The snake oil salesman is known to have sexually abused the chicken collector's chickens.[3]

Chickens are mentioned in Fallout 2, Fallout 3, the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Old World Blues and Fallout 4. Live chickens appear in the Fallout 4 add-on Far Harbor, Fallout 76, Fallout: Wasteland Warfare, and the Fallout TV series.
