The Rust is an environmental hazard and manmade phenomenon affecting the post-War region of Burning Springs in Appalachia. In the aftermath of the bombs dropping, southeastern Ohio was greatly damaged by chemical spills from Abraxodyne Chemical, which had a significant presence in the region.[1][2] This led to environmental destruction turning the area into a desert-like wasteland, in addition to affecting many of its residents with a serious illness, with prominent symptoms including heavy coughing and thirst.[3] The Rust appears as a story and gameplay element in Fallout 76, introduced in the Burning Springs update.
Background
In the aftermath of the Great War, chemicals produced by the Abraxodyne Chemical corporation were spilled throughout southeastern Ohio. Because the company had major influence in the area, they had significant transportation routes crossing through towns like Athens. Post-War chaos such as train derailments led to these chemicals greatly damaging the natural environment of southeastern Ohio. The toxin came to be known as the Rust, and it killed most plant life in the region,[4] giving it an appearance akin to a desert and originating its post-War name of Burning Springs.

Characteristics
The Rust is characterized by its easy-to-spot red appearance, causing those exposed to it to develop a significant cough, irritation of the eyes, a rash and hair loss, among other symptoms.[1][5] The Rust is able to seep easily into surfaces,[1] easily blowing in wind and seeping into groundwater, making it especially toxic to those who drink it. As a result of the Rust, most water sources in Burning Springs produce irradiated toxic water.[6]
Appearances
The Rust appears only in Fallout 76, introduced in the Burning Springs update.

Pop: "What does anyone know? It's death itself. It came after the Bombs, and took all the plants with it. I heard things started growing back in other places, but never here. Folks treat it like some kind of force of nature, but if you ask me? It ain't nature, it's us."

Ollie: "The red stuff, you must've seen heaps of it all over the area. Blows in with the wind, comes up with the groundwater. It's nasty. Burns the skin, burns the eye, and if you get it in your water you'll be doubling over for days. Older folks say it came after the bombs, but I wouldn't know. I was just a kid when they dropped 'em."
